AGRUPACIÓN FOLKÓRICA ELMYRBA and BALLET SABOR BORICUA

I. History
Since 1996 the Specialized School for Fine Arts has prepared students in performing, liberal and musical arts. Is part of the Department of Education of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. This school reunites students from schools around Arecibo area and instructs them on ballet, jazz and folkloric dance and music. Also have programs in music, theatre and visual arts.

Agrupación Folklórica ELMYRBA means ESTUDIO LUDICO de MUSICA Y RITMOS de BAILE AUTOCTONOS.

At 2014 group is reorganized and separating for adult and graduate people with new name Ballet Folklórico Sabor Boricua. Both groups has the same show and cultural background.

II. About us
ELMYRBA Folkloric Ensemble presents a variety show of Puerto Rico Folkloric Heritage with the richness of Taino Indians, Spainish and African cultures which combined create Puerto Rican Folklore.

Repertoire and workshops

1. Traditional dances (XVII, XVIII):

This part presents the traditional dance with the Spain and European influences. The Country dances are called Bailes de Garabato. Presenting dances as Seis, Mazurka, Polca. The Seis Dances has many variations.

2. African Heritage: Bomba (XVIII, XIX):

The Bomba evolved from the traditional African dance and music. It developed in the coast were slaves worked in the sugar cane plantations of the island. Traditional dances and festivities costumes such as Vejigantes, Caballeros (Gentlemen) and Viejitos (Old Men), and la Loca (the crazy medicine woman), Santiago Apostol Festival, Mascara Festival (Hatillo).

Ballroom Dances

Ballroom dances evolved on XIX Century include Danza Puerto Rico National Dance, walts and many Spanish and European heritage and society.

3. Plena (late XIX, XX):

The industrial revolution brought farm people to the cities bringing with them the rhythms and instruments and combine then with the African traditions and rhythms of the coast, creating the Plena.

4. Salsa (XX)

This music is the combination of popular rhythms from the Caribbean Islands. Salsa was born in the Puerto Rican Nationhood in New York by Puerto Rican musician. Today this is the music that represents our culture of Latin rhythm and soul.
Workshops
Offer workshops every genera it folklore and other dances. Include traditional instrument execution, dance steps for each genera, historic background and performance.
